Program Contact: Nell Eckersley

Agency Description:
The Literacy Assistance Center (LAC), based in downtown Manhattan, is a non-profit organization that offers FREE English as a Second Language and Reading and Writing classes at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Classes are two days a week on either Monday and Wednesday, Tuesday and Friday,  or Saturday and Sunday.  Each class is 2 hours long and have about twenty students enrolled. Overall, the Literacy Assistance Center offers 28 classes, 6 of which are TASC preparedness, and currently serves 415 actively participating students.

Agency Highlight:
The Literacy Assistance Center prides itself on preparing students for the TASC exam, so that they may obtain their High School Equivalency.  To do so, we offer two evening classes specifically for TASC preparedness to accommodate our students with day time employment. This past fiscal year, Raju Srinivasan, in addition to five more of our students from our evening cohort, passed the TASC exam and received their High School Equivalency. Seeing the success of these individuals, our students  are even more motivated to attend classes and obtain their own HSE.

Registration Information:
The Literacy Assistance Center hosts an official registration for classes every 3 months.
For information about when these registrations take place, please visit our website: www.lacnyc.org or please call Srikanth Srinivasan, our Intake Coordinator at 212-555-3355
In addition to official registration periods, the LAC also welcomes walk-ins. Walk-ins are welcome between 1 and 4pm.
