CUNY Lehman College Adult Learning Center

Agency Location:
250 Bedford Park Boulevard West, Old Gym Room 019, Bronx, NY 10468

Agency Description:
The Lehman College Adult Learning Center (ALC) has been providing educational opportunities to low income and immigrant Bronx residents age 18 and up since 1986. We offer classes for approximately 800 students a year in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Basic Literacy (BE) and High School Equivalency preparation (HSE), with close to one-third supported by ALE funding. We provide thoughtful, innovative instruction, skilled counseling, and a welcoming, nurturing environment. The Lehman ALC provides students with meaningful pathways toward qualitatively better lives for themselves and their families. Registration for classes is three times a year (usually in July, December, March).

Agency Highlight:

Part of the Lehman College Adult Learning Center’s focus is to empower adult students through narrative writing and connect their life experiences to the wider world of literacy. Each year, teacher Mindy Levokove invites her evening Basic Education students to submit their writing to different media outlets for publication. In early 2018, two of her students were accepted for publication. Ismett Vasquez had her original essay accepted for publication in the national adult literacy newspaper The Change Agent. In addition, Arnold Serieux’s story Hush Baby will be published in NYU Gallatin’s annual journal Literacy Review. Each year, her class, as well as others, partake in the Symphony Space: All Write! program. Students read published short fiction, respond to these stories through reflective narrative, and create stories of their own for submission and publication in the All Write! journal. This practice of developing stories helps students celebrate their lives in writing and become excited about the ability to share their perspectives and experiences. The Lehman College Adult Learning Center remains committed to developing writing with students at all literacy levels, and to students like Mindy’s, who extend their work to spaces outside the classroom.
