Community Impact

Agency Location:
2875 Broadway, New York, NY 10025

Agency Description:
Community Impact is both a non-profit organization and a department of Columbia University. We offer free ESOL classes (English to Speakers of Other Languages) at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Classes are four days a week from Monday to Thursday at the following schedules: 10am-12pm (beginners only), 12-2pm, 4-6pm, and 6-8pm. We hold three 12-week cycles every year: spring (January-May), summer (June-August), and fall (September-December).

Classes are held in a number of locations in Morningside, Manhattanville, Washington Heights, Harlem, and on the Columbia University campus. We currently serve over 200 actively participating students. In addition to language instruction, students have access to our support services, Job Road and College Road.

Agency Highlight:
Pascal Tafo arrived in the United States from Cameroon in July of 2015. In September, he began studying English at Community Impact, beginning in level 3. In the spring of 2017, he completed level 6. He also participated in our College Readiness program, where he had the opportunity to study with Columbia University professors and received an introduction to Columbia's core curriculum.

Eager to show his gratitude and help other immigrants in the community, Pascal volunteered as a teacher aide at Community Impact, in the summer and fall sessions of 2017. He has applied to Northeastern University in Boston and plans to study health informatics. Pascal continues to inspire our students with his success and recently helped his nephew apply for the English classes. We're looking forward to this next generation.
